BOXING VICTORIA TRAINING SESSIONS

PURPOSE & HISTORY

A strategic plan was recently developed and adopted by the national body. In line with the recommendations of the plan, the Victorian body established a High Performance program. The aim is to promote the highest standard of coaching, facilities and Sport Science and Medicine support for Victoria’s elite boxers to enable them to develop in a supportive environment and achieve international success at the highest level.

The responsibility for the program rests with the Victorian Director of Caching (a position currently held by Beau Gerring). With the approval of the Board, the director established a ‘State Coaching Panel’ mainly comprising most of the Level 2 coaches within Victoria.

The panel has organized a number of training sessions for Victoria’s boxers and coaches. The main objective of these sessions is to provide performance analysis and training sessions of a nature that will improve the standard of Victorian boxing.

By bringing the better boxers in the state together to train and have fitness tests it is hoped that the level of excellence required will become clearer to the boxers that are yet to reach that level. It is also an important method of exposure to different ideas and methods of training for the boxers and coaches so that they become used to what occurs at the national and international level.

This approach has already reaped measurable dividends. Over the sessions held to date. The standard of performance has increased across all the levels of boxers to the extent that the lower level boxers are now performing at the level that the top tier boxers were performing at the beginning of these sessions.

We are now fortunate enough to have the VIS involved with the amateur boxing and their strengths in sports science will further benefit and enhance this aspect of our strategies. Those boxers that demonstrate a clear dedication to excellence will have an opportunity to further benefit from the expertise of the VIS.

These sessions are now considered so important that winning State Title will no longer be sufficient to represent Victoria at National events. Boxers wishing to represent Victoria at a higher level MUST attend these sessions or risk non-selection for such events.

In an effort to make it easier for everyone to attend these sessions, the location will be changed regularly.
